Health Insurance Without a Job (self-employed, in-between jobs, retirees)

COBRA Coverage

If you have recently lost your coverage from an employer, you may be eligible to continue your health insurance through that employer-plan through COBRA. The downside is that your employer will no longer contribute towards the plan and may even add an administrative fee on top of it. But if all else fails, this is an option available to you. It is important to research other options before immediately jumping on your employer/previous employer’s COBRA plan.

If you are unable to obtain coverage through a spouse, or family, then you may qualify for coverage through Medi-Cal.

Anyone living within 138% of the Federal Poverty Level (FPL) may be eligible for Medi-Cal.

Medicare is provided by the government and available if you are over 65 years of age and some people with disabilities. If you combine Medicare with a Medicare Supplement or Medicare Advantage, you can have surprisingly strong health coverage for less than most people pay for coverage.

Covered California

Depending on your household size and adjusted gross income, you could qualify for a tax subsidy to help you pay with your insurance and make your coverage much more affordable. Open enrollment starts November 1st, but you can request a quote now!

Individual and Family Health Insurance

If all else fails, you can purchase insurance in the individual and family market on your own, without a tax subsidy.
